In the aftermath of the tragic murder of George Floyd, the urgent need for racial justice conversations ignited a fire within communities across the nation. Recognizing the importance of amplifying marginalized voices and fostering understanding and dialogue, I invited my friend, Andréa Michel, to join me in a collaborative journey to create the podcast, "Decentering Whiteness - A Racial Justice Journey."
The podcast, available on YouTube, serves as a platform for open dialogue, education, and personal reflection on the pervasive issue of systemic racism. Through a series of insightful interviews, discussions, and thought-provoking personal explorations, the podcast aimed to deconstruct the deeply ingrained norms and biases that perpetuate white supremacy while empowering listeners to have difficult, vulnerable and authentic conversations about race and racism with their friends.
Each one of the seven episode delves into a range of critical topics, including the historical context of racism, the experiences of people of color, growing up in the invisible bubble of white supremacy, the concept of white privilege, and the importance of allyship. We fostered a space for empathy, learning, and collective action. But mostly we just modeled how friends with good, open hearts, can talk about race in respectful and impactful ways.
Here are the videos we created:
Episode 1: Introductions
Episode 2: Why is it so difficult to talk about race?
Episode 3: Racism in the black community: colorism
Episode 4: Challenge white myths about racism
Episode 5: Race & The U.S. Capitol Insurrection
Episode 6: Using White Privilege for Good
Episode 7: Microagressions
